Thorrington Mill Vineyard was born out of a dream of Mark & Polly’s to own their own vineyard and make their own wine. The 12 acre vineyard was planted on the sea level south facing slopes of their beautiful family farm on the Essex coast. Varieties that were planted were chosen for their popularity in the English wine making world and include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Bacchus. These can make a variety of still and sparkling wines.

MARK AND POLLY BAINES
Mark & Polly started a landscaping and fencing business in 2002 and a glamping business in 2015 but decided to go a step further and make their dream of planting a vineyard in coastal Essex a reality in April 2018 when they took on the family farming business, running the businesses alongside each other.
They planted a 12 acre vineyard on the family farm with a mixture of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Bacchus plants. “Thorrington Mill” was then born, named after our farm, Mill Farm, which has one of only three working tide mills in the country.
After investing in some specialist vineyard machinery to look after their own vineyard, they have since started to provide their services to other vineyard owners in the area.
They also bought 12 Shropshire sheep which were chosen to be particularly good at grazing in between the vines.

In 2022 we welcomed our first vintage of Bacchus and Pinot Noir Rose wines. Both award winning in their own rights. We also opened the vineyard up to the public and enjoyed some wonderful evenings in the vines with woodfired pizza, hog roasts, currys and live music. We also held a number of vineyard tours and tastings.
